Triphala and Chyawanprash are two great Ayurvedic medicines. They both rejuvenate body and hence useful for anti aging purpose. But one has only three ingredients and the other has 37+. One requires just five minutes to prepare (powder the three and mix), while the other requires one full day. So how to decide which suits whom? Let’s find out.
Nourishment Vs Cleansing (detoxifying)  -  If you are particularly looking for cleansing and detoxifying, Triphala is more suited. I am not saying that Chyawanprash is not cleansing (please take your gun off my head :) ) Of course it does cleansing as well. But because it contains ghee, sugar, raisins etc, it is more nourishing than cleansing. So, if you are looking for nourishment and rejuvenation, go ahead with Chyawanprash.
Dosha imbalance -  Both are Tridosha balancing, no doubt. But Triphala balances Kapha and Pitta Dosha, more and Chyawanaprash balances Kapha and Vata Dosha, more.

Where Triphala holds a slight edge over Chyavanprash -
Diabetes - If you are diabetic, taking Triphala makes more sense than taking Chyawanprash. Chyawanprash contains sugar. If the diabetes is well under control, then taking Chyavanaprasham does not do any harm, but still, taking Triphala is safer and makes more sense.
Eye care - It does not mean that Chyawanprash will not help in eye care. But if you are targeting specifically your eyes, then Triphala makes more sense than Chyawanprash.
Wound care – Again, Chyawanprash is helpful, but Triphala is more helpful in non healing wounds. It is useful internally, in the form of powder / capsule / Kashaya. Triphala Kashaya is also used externally for washing wounds, to do sitz bath in piles, fistula, etc.
Chronic skin diseases – associated with itching, scaling, secretions etc, Triphala is more suited.
Obesity - Because Triphala does not increase digestion strength to that extent as Chyawanprash, and because Triphala doubles as mild laxative and has cleansing property, it is more suited in obesity.
Where Chyawanprash is more suited than Triphala -
Respiratory disease, asthma, cold cough -  The first benefit of Chyawanprash enlisted in the ancient formula is – useful in Kasa (cough, cold) and Shwasa (asthma, wheezing etc).
Digestion boost – Chyavanprash contains spices like long pepper, cinnamon etc which are very useful for boosting the digestion strength.
Lean and weak – If you are underweight with loss of appetite, then look no further than Chyawanprash.
Too young and too old – Chyawanprash can be given in very minute dose to kids above 3 years of age. It helps immensely in keeping the cold, cough, anorexia away. Similarly, it is more suited in very elderly people who are weak due to severe degeneration.
Aphrodisiac – Apart from being a good anti aging medicine, Chyawanprash is also very good to improve sexual health.
Improvement in skin complexion – It nourishes the skin, so improves skin texture and complexion.
Memory and Intelligence - One of the important benefits of Chyawanprash as quoted in the traditional formula is – improvement in memory and concentration.
Having enlisted the above criteria, it is also noteworthy that, both are not mutually exclusive. They can be taken together, if your doctor decides so. But if you are to chose only one among the two, I hope that the above points might come in handy. Cheers!

In Ayurveda, Chicken Pox is known as Laghu Masurika. It is medically known as Vericella. It is a highly contagious disease and mostly attacks children between the age group of one to ten years and some times affect adults. It is a viral disease and even after the disease has been cured the virus remains hidden in the body and may attack again later. It is often mistaken as small pox but it is a different disease and less severe.

CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

It is mainly caused by a virus called varicella-zoster virus. Local skin infection due to over growth of other bacteria, sensitive skin, prolonged illness, poor immunity, use of a strong soap and taking a long bubble bath may also be one of the causes of chicken pox. People who are in contact with the chicken pox patients have a high chance of getting the disease.
The disease starts with slight fever and pain in the back and legs. The person has a runny or stuffy nose and a burning sensation in the eyes which become red in color and water. There may also be a feeling of chill. Within twenty four hours of these symptoms small red papules appear on the back, arms, legs and chest. Sometimes these papules may also arise on the fore head. These papules turn into vesicles but these dry up within a day or two and a crust brown in color appear on them. These eruptions last several days.
According to ayurveda, chicken pox is caused due to the vitiation of all the doshas – vata dosha, pitta dosha and kapha dosha.

Herniated disk what we commonly call ‘slipped disk’.  It can be a very painful and debilitating condition.
How does Ayurveda help treat herniated disc naturally and safely?
In Ayurveda, herniated disk is a condition that happens due to an imbalance of Vata element. This throws your body out of equilibrium. Ayurvedic treatment is a good way to restore the basic functional strength of your body.
In some people, symptoms like severe back pain, leg pain, or weakness of the lower extremity muscles are traced to a herniated disc. When the cushion that sits between the spinal vertebra is pushed outside its normal position, you have a herniated disc. This can occur as a result of rupture or bulging due to injury, disease, or deterioration. The spinal disc when pushed out irritates the spinal nerves that lay very close to the edge of these spinal discs causing severe pain.
Herniated disc can occur to anyone. It is, however, seen more commonly in people between the ages of 35 to 45 who perform heavy manual labour or drive motor vehicles for long periods of time. There are a plethora of effective Ayurvedic treatments for herniated disks that help restore the equilibrium that is caused by Vata imbalance and provide you relief from lower back pain.
How Ayurvedic therapies help in treating herniated disk?
The ayurvedic healing therapies are beneficial in many ways:
  • -They help in strengthening the supportive tissues that hold your spine.
  • -They help release the muscular spasm and nerve compression.
  • -They nourish the joints by enhancing circulation and relieve pain.
Here are the Ayurvedic therapies you can employ to treat herniated disk:
Kativasti
The term ‘Kativasti’ is made up of two parts – ‘Kati’ meaning the waist area of your body and ‘Vasti’ meaning a pouch like arrangement. In Kativasti treatment, medicated oils are used on your back to treat the herniated disk condition.
Procedure:
The patient is made to lie down on his/her stomach on a bed. Medicated oil is spread over the lumbo-sacral area. After this, a reservoir or a ring is made on this lumbo-sacral region with dough made out of black gram powder. It is made sure that the ring is free from any leakage.
Medicated lukewarm oil is slowly poured into this ring. The temperature of the oil is preserved by reheating and continuously adding more oil. This is done for 30 to 40 minutes.
Later, the affected area is massaged lightly. It is followed by steaming for another 15 minutes which allows better absorption of medicated oil in your body. This process is carried over five to seven days as prescribed by the ayurvedic doctor.
How safe is Kativasti?
Kativasti is pretty safe for you. There are no side effects. This treatment is even safe for heart patients as only gentle massage is given. The only precaution to be taken is to keep the temperature of the medicated oil lukewarm to avoid blistering or scalding of skin.
Abhyanga
Abhyanga is a process where a person is given massage in slow and rhythmic movements throughout the body from head to toe. Warm medicated oils are used by one or two massage therapists for 40 to 60 minutes. The Abhyanga massage is performed in seven postures in by varying pressure at different points in the body.
What are the benefits of Abhyanga?
  • -It harmonizes the imbalance in the body due to Vata.
  • -It provides nourishment and vitality to the bones, tissues, ligaments, helps reduce pain and enhances your healing capacity.
  • -It keeps you full of vitality, removes fatigue and relaxes your body and mind.
Kizhi
Kizhi involves massaging your body with poultices that are made of therapeutic herbs and medicated healing oils. These warm poultices are used to massage the body. This helps the oil to get absorbed by your body tissues, helps in eliminating accumulated toxins.
This therapy rejuvenates your body, improves blood circulation throughout the body, removes muscular fatigue, alleviates mental stress and effectively helps treat herniated disk condition as well as other joint ailments or injuries.
Dhanyamla Dhara
‘Dhanyamla’ means body and ‘Dhara’ means continuous flow of liquid. This therapy involves pouring of herbal medicated oils throughout different parts of your body. This is done by pouring warm oil from a vessel hung overhead over the affected areas of your body in a rhythm.
It is given for 45 to 60 minutes and lasts for 7 to 12 days depending upon your doctor’s assessment.
This therapy helps relieve body ache and muscular spasms by boosting blood circulation. It revitalizes your body and enhances immune system immensely. It is an effective method of treating herniated disk.

OA Knee joint is mainly the form of Osteo-Arthritis which is a degenerative joint disease due to the lack of lubricating (Synovial) fluid in the joints, leading to damage in cartilage, bone, joint capsule, ligaments and muscles.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a condition when the cartilage cushioning the ends of bones in a synovial joint gradually deteriorates resulting in pain, tenderness and stiffness of the joints. Osteoarthritis affects millions of people worldwide and eventually ends up in loss of movement of the effected joints. The condition is more common in weight bearing joints like knees, hip etc., affecting the normal routine lifestyle. The risk factors identified by modern medicine include old age (wear and tear), obesity or extra body weight, injuries and bone deformities. OA is seen more commonly in women compared to men. The treatment targets to control the pain and inflammation at the effected joint.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Osteoarthritis:

In Ayurveda, this condition is referred to as Sandhivata. Among the three doshasvata dosha is considered to be the one responsible for all movements. Imbalance in vata causes the ama (toxins) to move into the colon from where it reaches the circulatory system and gets deposited in the weak joints resulting in stiffness and pain characteristic of arthritis. Thus, the main objective in Ayurveda to treat Osteoarthritis is to remove ama by Ayurvedic treatments of Panchakarma and also improving the digestion and at the same time reducing the vata by relieving the pain and inflammation. Along with elimination of ama from the body, it is also important to follow fasting or a controlled diet so that the body reduces release of harmful toxins and the immune system is able to eliminate harmful toxins from the body. Certain Ayurvedic herbs are beneficial as they act as free radical scavengers and help fight against toxins. Massage with certain herbal oils also to reduce vata and get rid of pain and inflammation. A regular routine of yoga and mild exercise further helps achieve the right balance of physical and mental stress.

What Ayurveda Offers:

Ayurveda specializes in detoxification. Some of the detoxification treatments involve a mild sweating action to help open the physical channels of the body and help push out the toxins. Also, Ayurveda offers special knee joint massage and external treatment for relieving knee pain. In this particular Ayurvedic procedure, the warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is used to bathe the knee. This may be followed by hot fomentation of the knee joint.

Janu Basti:

Ayurvedic This is an authentic Ayurveda procedure to relieve you from knee pain and is generally performed at Doctor Panickers Ayurveda Hospital. Two trained therapists will lightly massage your knee with warm and medicated oil which is vata balancing. And then warm medicated oil is filled over the knees, by making a doughnut shape area encircling the knees. This entire procedure takes about 30 minutes. This is one of the best known Ayurveda treatments for knee pain.

Quite a lot of people start worrying about their knees making pops and cracks sound. In most cases, these noises are not indicative of any underlying problem. Many people have knees that make these noises when they squat down or go through the full arc of motion. But when the cracking or popping is accompanied with pain or swelling, then it should be treated.

Why Does Knees Make Noise?

As we age, cartilage, which is the tissue that covers the bones can develop uneven areas. When we squat or stand, the sound comes from these rougher surfaces gliding across each other. The same sound could also emit from another tissue called ligaments that connects one bone to the other.

Also while aging, gas can build up in the areas surrounding the joint, forming tiny bubbles in the synovial fluid. When you bend your knee, some of the bubbles burst, and ligaments may snap or pop. This is normal, and happens to everyone from time to time.

When Should You Worry?

If you have cracking or popping that does cause pain or swelling, it can be a sign of:
- Meniscus tears, which is often caused by sudden, acute trauma, such as twisting while playing sports.
- Cartilage injury or wear.
- Knee crepitus, another term for cracking and popping sounds, is one of the common symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA). It also can be one of the symptoms of rheumatoid or infectious arthritis, and may accompany several different types of knee injuries.

Treatment

Crepitus is harmless and needs no treatment when it isn’t caused by disease, injury, another condition, and doesn’t hurt. But, when pain accompanies a crunchy knee, treatment will depend on the underlying cause. In rare cases, surgery or joint replacement may be necessary.
