If you remove all foods high in sugar, starchy veggies, sweet fruits especially the juice, snacking, and half of your carbs especially grains and rice, and then workout with light weights for 30 minutes every other day, the body will build new muscle from the protein and burn fat for energy for the next 12-48 hours after the workout.
Here is my challenging but very effective 3-step fat burning approach:
Step 1:

STOP consuming ALL sugar!

  • No starchy veggies.
  • No fruit juice at all and only fruit low in sugar like apples.
  • No sweets of any kind or any product with any type of sugar or sweetener (OK, some stevia and a little honey is fine).
  • No alcohol, cookies, candy, cereals, processed foods with added sugar, etc. Nothing with sugar.
Why? Because if your body has simple carbohydrates then it will just use the calories or energy from this source and not bother burning any existing fat reserves.
Don’t bother with further steps until you have completed step #1!
Step 2:

Eat A LOT of vegetables with beans.

  • Have greens for breakfast, (fried or steamed is fine, even juiced is ok).
  • Have large salads for lunch and dinner (follow individual body-type recommendations).
Half your plate for each meal should be vegetables!
Prefer raw vegetables and steamed cruciferous vegetables.  Why?  Because it takes more calories or energy to digest raw vegetables and with their high fiber makes them very cleansing, thus perfect for weight-loss. Easy, eat LOTS of greens!
Juicing vegetables every day helps too but without the fiber it is not as cleansing as fresh veggies.  If you have blood sugar issues, focus on dark greens.  Celery, kale, parsley, spinach are the best.  For a heavier juice with more protein add asparagus, string beans and cauliflower. To sweeten it up use limes not carrots, beets or apples. To replace a meal just add about 6 tablespoons of hemp seeds and a couple teaspoons of freshly ground flax seeds.

Use only vegetable protein, reduce carbohydrates and add healthy oil/fat

  • Stop all animal protein and replace with legumes: Beans (kapha-type and Pitta-type) and lentils (Vata -type).
  • Use coconut oil instead of butter, and sunflower oil instead of olive oil
  • Gradually reduce carbohydrates such as rice and other whole grains to half servings (1/2 of a fist size)
Prefer meals of beans or lentils with lots of veggies and a small portion of whole-grains with a little oil.  Why? Your body needs protein to build new muscle and tissue as a result of the light weight training.  Both protein and oil (fat) are very satisfying for the body and takes away cravings.   Remember, there must be some oil and a good portion protein with each meal.  Otherwise, you will become nutritionally deficient and will start craving more carbs, and we know that leads to fast weight gain!
Step 3:

EAT LESS! :Stick to a tight eating schedule

  • Never eat after 7pm even fruit. Try to eat earlier like 5 or 4.
  • Drink only water with lemon or herbal teas between meals; no fruit juices etc.
  • Eat 3 small meals a day or just 2 meals, or just have a salad for dinner. In other words: EAT LESS!
Why? The body burns fat between meal so the longer you can make the space between meals the more fat you will burn. But don’t skip meals even breakfast.  Do a late breakfast and early dinner or skip dinner sometimes.  No matter what,  don’t start snacking on “healthy” snacks. You need to be cooking and preparing two or three complete meals each day.  Also don’t start juicing every meal and not using a plate!  Cook, prepare, sit down, eat slowly and when you are starting to feel full, stop. Simple.
You may have to work at this for a few weeks or even a month.
Step 4 – Bonus Step

Add some light weight training and/or juice fasting

Do 30 minutes every other day
  • Do 10 minutes of solid cardio first, like running in place or biking to break a sweat and get your heart rate up
  • Do at least two sets each and rest 1- 2 minutes in between sets
  • Each set should be until you have some muscle strain (work up to it).
  • Do some cardio to warm up and cool down but focus on the weight training to build muscle.
You don’t need a gym to to do this, just run in place, use a step or go up stairs etc. and then lift some weights or some big cans of beans! Just works those muscles!
If you cannot work out everyday, then the next option is to do juice fasts and eat only two meals a day.  Make your choice, workout or eat a lot less.
  • A juice fast will further “force” the body to lose more weight if this type of therapy is suitable or even necessary.

How To Use Ghee For Skin Care? A Simple Ayurveda Method

It is a common notion that ghee is used only orally. But in Ayurveda, it is extensively used for skin care. A special but very simple ghee preparation is used in many skin conditions like burns, wound scars, skin marks, burning sensation etc.

How To Use Ghee For Skin?
This ghee remedy is called as Shata dhauta ghrita in Ayurveda.
  • Shata = 100
  • Dhauta = washed with water
  • Ghrita = ghee or clarified butter.
What you need?
  • Ghee – 10 ounce
  • water – sufficient quantity.
In this home remedy for skin care, we are taking ghee, adding with equal quantity of water, mixing it thoroughly with hand or a machine for 3 – 5 minutes, letting out the water. Then again we are adding fresh water and continuing mixing. Like this, we are repeating it for as many times as possible. In Ayurveda, it is advised to repeat the procedure for 100 times. But in practice, it is usually done for 20 – 30 times.
Changes -
The ghee turns to white colour. It will be smoother to touch and will have butter like consistency.   When you touch it, you can appreciate that it is lot cooler.

Benefits of ghee for skin -
  • This Shata dhauta ghrita is used to relieve burning sensation, to relieve burn wounds, wound scar, herpes wounds, chicken pox scars, etc.
  • It acts as natural skin moisturizer, if used daily. It can be applied over face, left for 10 minutes, washed with warm water.
  • In pregnant woman, with unexplained bleeding or spotting, traditionally, it is advised to apply this Shata dhauta ghrita around umbelicus.
  • In Ayurvedic leech therapy, after the treatment, to reduce the burning sensation and to check further bleeding, this ghee is applied of the affected area.
Shelf life: 4 – 6 months.
Because this ghee eventually contains some remnant moisture inside, it is not ideal to store it for more than six months.    It should be stored in a clean, dry air tight container.  Over exposure to air will cause foul smell.

6 Foods That Speed Up Aging & Make You Look Older

Some unhealthy eating habits do worse than make you fat and tired – they age you from the inside out.

Do you know that certain foods you eat wreak havoc not just with your health but with how youthful you look and how well you age in every category? The old adage ‘You are what you eat” is true.  It is nutrition, not our chronological age that determines how youthful you look and feel.
6 foods that have a profound influence on how you age:

1. Sugar.

Sugar not only creates weight gain easily, but it also creates wrinkles, sagging skin and poor health. An interesting process takes place called ‘glycation’ that literally renders your bodily tissues inflexible or simply damages them. The sugar circulating in your bloodstream attaches to protein in your body that create new molecules appropriately and precisely named ‘AGES’ or advanced glycation end products. Glycation is the caramelization of bodily tissue <-yes .="" p="">Think of those crispy browned potatoes on the stove – the crispy part is an example of glycation. That same process is happening in your body. Most vulnerable? Collagen and elastin which keep our skin firm and youthful; once damaged this leads to wrinkles and sagging skin.

2. Trans Fats.

Trans fats exert an inflammatory effect within the body such as creating a stiffening of the arteries or constricted blood vessels that lead to less blood flow to the skin and much more, leaving skin older, stiffer, more wrinkled. Be careful to read the nutrition label for ‘hydrogenated fats’ as this is code for trans fats.
Trans fats can be found in highly processed foods such as fast food, junk food, pie crust, deep fried foods, margarine, canned frosting, Bisquick type products, non-dairy creamers and much more. Even if the label says zero trans fats, the food manufacturers’ are allowed to state zero even if they have a half gram of trans fats. One half gram of trans fats still has a mighty unhealthful impact upon our health.

3. Alcohol.

Alcohol in moderation exerts a healthy effect that results in a you that ages well. However, excess alcohol can really speed up aging in the form of premature wrinkles, loss of collagen, elasticity, redness, dehydration and puffiness. Nutrient depletion, liver inflammation and dehydration are the culprits when too much alcohol is ingested. *By the way, if you are steering clear of red wine due to the staining factor it exerts, white wine actually causes dental damage by making teeth more prone to longer-lasting stains.

4. Excess Carbohydrates.

Just like sugar that creates a caramelization effect inside and outside your body, refined carbs (healthy carbs stripped of all the good stuff) and excess healthy carbs do too. You can look at refined carbs as simply sugars in disguise. Once these carbs hit the blood stream – they behave just like sugar. Also, refined/excess carbs trigger insulin in excess and too much insulin prevents fat loss, slows or prevents lean muscle growth.
In addition, excess insulin also leaves you hungry 30 min. after eating and this becomes a vicious cycle. The main stimulus for insulin secretion is dietary carbohydrates. Stick to complex carbs such as legumes and veggies as the fiber slows down the release of sugar and this equates to less glycation and less weight.

5. Low-Fat Foods.

Everywhere you look you see the result of decades worth of bad advice that has left the majority of people fat and unknowingly aging their bodies. Fat does not make you fat. In fact, fat promotes weight loss and youthfulness. The low-fat era is, unfortunately, still with us. Most people when they look at the nutrition label are more concerned with the fat grams. Low-fat eating simply deprives one of all the nutritious fats that keeps us healthy and youthful. A diet rich in essential and healthy fats plays a crucial role in how skin ages by reducing inflammation in skin, encouraging hair growth and and build strong cell membranes that reduce water loss in skin cells and much more.
Sources of healthy fats include: walnuts, salmon, flaxseed, chia seeds, avocados, almonds, cold water fish, hemp seeds, wheat germ, all nuts and seeds, dark green leafy veggies, Omega 3-fortified eggs, coconut oil

6. Salt.

Excess salt in the diet from foods such as chips, crackers, pretzels, bagels, cereals, bagels, cereals, canned foods, cheeses and even cottage cheese can retain fluid in the body creating a puffy look and paradoxically can cause the cells to shrink thus creating dehydration. This results not just in the sensation of thirst, but older, dehydrated, wrinkled skin.

Reducing or avoiding these foods is your key to a more energetic, vibrant and youthful you – inside and out.

To your good health,

Ayurvedic Concepts of Alcoholic Poison (Madhya Visha)

Ayurvedic Concepts of Alcoholic Poison (Madhya Visha)

Derivation

The word 'Mada' generally means addiction, lust or madness. From the medical point of view, it means partial loss of intellect, consciousness and discriminating power. The word 'Madhya', derived from the root word 'Mada', means which makes the person to lose his senses after consumption is called 'madhya'

Definition

In 'Sharangadhara Samhita', while defining about the 'Madhakari' property, Madhya is also included in the classified drugs. Drugs that predominantly possess Tamas and cause the derangement of the mind are called as 'Madhakari'- intoxicants.

Properties of Alcohol

The ten properties of alcohol as follows:

  • Light
  • Hot
  • Sharp
  • Finely entering
  • Sour
  • Quickly absorbed
  • Quick acting
  • Rough
  • Depressant
  • Non slimy

Alcohol has the ten opposite qualities of Ojas (Life energy), so if taken in an improper manner, it will act like a poison.

Merits and Demerits of Alcohol

Alcohol is made of multiple ingredients possessing many properties and actions, and they are intoxicating in nature; due to this, it is characterized by both merits and demerits.

It is like nectar if consumed according to the prescribed manner, in proper quantity, in proper time, with wholesome food; in accordance to one's strength and cheerful mind, alcohol works like nectar.

On the contrary, it acts like poison for those who indulge in the consumption of wine in unwholesome manner, irrespective of time of consumption and quantity, whose body constitution is rough in nature and who continuously indulges in physical activities.

Merits

Alcohol taken in an appropriate manner produces exhilaration, energy, happiness, nourishment, good health, excellent virility, and pleasant intoxication immediately.

Alcohol improves the appetite, tones up the heart, promotes the voice and complexion. It brings the feeling of refreshment, perfection and strength and removes fear, grief and fatigue. It induces sleep for the insomniac, stimulates speech for the timid speaker, awakens those who oversleep/are in sleepy mood, corrects the constipation and gives relief to the mentally disturbed. Even the disorders caused by wine are countered by wine itself.

Demerits

The person addicted to alcohol does not differentiate between the right/wrong, good/bad, happiness/unhappiness, suitable/unsuitable; he does not even know how to behave and talk.

Alcohol creates great agitation of the mind as a terrific storm does to the trees on the river bank. The fools overcome by Rajas and Tamas becomes addicted to wine and feel it to be the solution for their happiness.

Alcohol addiction produces confusion, fear, grief, anger, death and diseases like insanity, intoxication, narcosis, epilepsy and convulsions. The alcohol, which is responsible for the derangement of memory, though composed of other good qualities, is totally contraindicated for consumption.

Effects of alcohol on the body

  • Effects on Ojas

After the intake, alcohol enters the heart and counteracts the ten properties of Ojas with its corresponding ten properties and gives rise to mental distortions as follows:

Ojas
Alcohol
Heaviness
Lightness
Coldness
Hotness
Sweetness
Sourness
Softness
Sharpness
Clarity
Quick action
Unctuousness
Roughness
Stability
Quick absorption
Smoothness
Depressant action
Sliminess
Non-sliminess
Viscosity
Subtleness

Stages of Alcohol

Ayurveda says that the drinking of alcohol produces three stages of intoxication. The book of pathology 'Madhava Nidana' says it is of four stages.

  • First Stage

In the first stage, the intoxication starts when the heart is stimulated but the Ojas is not affected and the person would be more inclined towards sexual acts, there will be an increase in the seminal fluid, more pleasure and loud speech.

In the first stage, it exerts features like exhilaration, pleasure, invokes interest in foods and drinks, in instrumental and vocal music, humour and stories. It gives sound sleep and fresh awakening, does not affect the intellect, memory and perception by senses. Thus Ayurveda calls this as a stage of 'inducing pleasure'

  • Second Stage

In the middle stage, the person often forgets and recollects the things, has indistinct speech and voice, simultaneously speaks sense and nonsense. His movements, posture, drinking, eating and talking all are incoherent and funny.

The person becomes prominent in Rajas and Tamas, having crossed the limit of the middle stage but not reaching the third, one behaves unwholesomely; no wise person would like to enter this stage, which is with serious complications like insanity and a journey towards an unhappy destination.

Madhava Kara says that in this stage, the person indulges in irrelevant speech etc. and his appearance and behaviour seem to be psychic, drowsy and lazy. He loses self-control and discrimination power between the dos and don'ts. He disregards the elders, eats the non-eatables, thus his sensibility gets lost and due to the influence of the intoxication (Mada), the person expresses the secrets of the mind. (This stage is divided into second and third stage by Madhava Kara)

  • Third Stage

In the third stage of intoxication, the person becomes motionless like a cut wood, his mind becomes narcotic, confused and he appears to be dead. He neither perceives the pleasurable senses nor recognizes his own friends, family etc. He does not get the enjoyment for which the wine was taken. He becomes ncapable in recognizing good or bad, useful or harmful etc. He is condemned and disliked by all and prone to miserable diseases as a complication. (These features are described as fourth stage by Madhava Kara)

Diseases Due to Improper Use of Alcohol

Alcohol produces different types of disorders if used by persons who are in rage, frightened, thirsty, in grief, hungry or exhausted due to physical exercise, and those who have suppressed the natural urges, overloaded the stomach with excessively sour and pungent foods, taken heavy food even when the previous food is not digested, weak persons suffering from heat exhaustion, those who drink alcohol empty stomach, alone and daily develop many troublesome diseases which ultimately become fatal.

General Features of Alcoholic Intoxication (Panatyaya / Madatyaya)

The general symptoms are

  • Severe delusions
  • Pain in the heart region
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constant thirst
  • Fever having both heat & cold
  • Complete loss of appetite
  • Pain in head, back, flanks and joints
  • Tremors
  • Cutting pain in the vital parts
  • Catching pain in the back (scapular region)
  • Obstruction of the chest
  • Blindness/Unconsciousness
  • Cough
  • Dyspnoea
  • Total loss of sleep
  • Excessive perspiration
  • Indigestion/feeling of fullness of the abdomen
  • Complete body swelling - especially the limbs
  • Disorders of the mind
  • Irrelevant talk
  • Excessive salivation
  • Giddiness

Specific features of alcoholic intoxication

Ayurveda divides these into four, namely, Vata, Pitta, Kapha and the combination of all.

  • Vata: Stiffness of the limbs, body aches, discomfort in the heart/chest region, pricking sensation, tremors and headache.
  • Pitta: Excessive sweating, delirium, dryness of the mouth, burning sensation, fainting and yellowish discolouration of the body, especially eyes and nails.
  • Kapha: Severe vomiting, heaviness of the body, complete loss of appetite, excessive salivation and chills.
  • Combination of all the above: In this condition, there will be mixed symptoms due to vitiation of all the three doshas.

Ayurvedic Concepts of Hangover (Paramada)

The symptoms are as follows:

  • Sensation of warmth and heaviness of the limbs
  • Anorexia
  • Increased secretion of mucus
  • Headache
  • Pain in the joints

Ayurvedic descriptions of alcoholic gastritis (Pana - Ajeerna)

The symptoms are as follows:

  • Flatulence
  • Vomiting
  • Acid eruptions
  • All the symptoms of aggravated Pitta

Alcoholic Giddiness (Pana - Vibhrama)

The symptoms are as follows:

  • Pricking pain in the cardiac region and body
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Feeling as if the internal organs are covered with smoke
  • Fainting
  • Expectoration of mucous
  • Headache
  • Pyrosis
  • Aversion to alcohol and food

Treatment

This can be explained in two ways:

  • General treatment
  • Specific treatment

General Treatment

  • According to the vitiated dosha.
  • Administration of alcohol as medicine: The diseases which arise from inadequate, improper use of alcohol etc. get cured by the same if administered properly with great caution. Charaka says that, because of the vitiated doshas, Vata get obstructed in the channels and produces severe pain; by proper administration of alcohol, Vata gets its normal movement and thereby makes the body normal.
  • Administration of milk: If the above methods are not yielding good results, then administration of wine should be stopped immediately and use of milk should be started. After the dryness and burning sensation etc. are reduced, milk should also be withdrawn slowly with substitutes of diet.
  • Psychological measures: Alcohol does not cause alcoholism without causing agitations of the mind and causing morbidity in the body, hence exhilarating measures are necessary. Following measurements may help in fast recovery from the intoxication: beautiful parks, ponds with lotus flower, good food and drinks, pleasing companions, garlands, perfumes, washed clothes, melodious music, entertaining parties, ample arrangement of talks, jokes and songs and beloved and submissive women etc. alleviate alcoholism in no time.

Specific Treatment

  • Vata madatyaya: Maricha, Ardraka, Deepya, and Kushta mixed with Sauvarchala lavana taken with wine / Prthvika, Deepyaka, Mahaushadha and Hingu along with Sauvarchala lavana should be dispensed as a beneficial recipe. One should use the drinks prepared with juices of Amra, Amrataka, Dadima,Matulunga / meat soup/ meat soup mixed with the above juices should be given.
  • Pitta madatyaya: The wine should be mixed with the decoction of drugs belonging to sweet taste mixed with honey, sugar and the good flavors are beneficial. After taking this wine, one should take concentrated sugarcane juice, after some time he should be made to vomit. Then non-sour preparations like meat juice of Lava, Aina and Tittira or greengram soup with sugar and ghee should be provided to drink.
  • Kapha madatyaya: Vomiting should be induced by using wine mixed with the juice of Bimbi and Vidula.Meat soup of animals with bitter and pungent spices should be given. Soups of pulses, processed with bitter and pungent spices, are also beneficial.
  • Vata+ Pitta+ Kapha madatyaya: Combination of all the above.

Treatment for hangover (Paramada)

  • Kashmarya, Dharu, Vida, Dadima & Pippali along with Draksha should be added to water and drink should be made, to which Beejapuraka juice should be added and if quickly taken as a drink, the condition of Paramada gets totally relieved in no time.
  • Draksha, sugar, Madhuka, Jeeraka, Dhanyaka, and Trivrit should be similarly prepared and taken as a drink.
  • On the same day, meat soup of animals (wild, fatty) with Sauvarchala salt and citreous fruits juices should be advised. Bath with water processed with Bharangi root is also beneficial.

Treatment for Pana- Ajeerna

  • Ikshvagu, Damargava, Vrkshaka, Kakahvayo, Damabarika should be cooked with milk and given in an Anjali (Measurement) to induce vomiting.
  • Further, in the evening, the person should drink the wine again as prescribed to restore the digestive fire.

Treatment for Pana Vibrama

  • Syrup prepared from Draksha, Kaphitta, Citreous fruits and Dadima with lot of honey and sugar Pana Vibrama.
  • In the same way, Amrataka and Kola should be used as syrup.
  • Syrup prepared from Karjuraka, Vetraka, Kareera, Draksha, Trivrit, and Sripati with sugar should be used in the cold state.
  • Tender leaves of latex trees, Bisa, Jeeraka, Naga Pushpa, Patra, Ilavalu, Sitasariva, Padmaka, Arata,Bhavya, Karamardha, Kaphitha, Kola, Vrkshamla, Vetraphala, Jeeraka and Dadima should be taken after adding Yashti and Utphala as a cold drink.

One who, after discontinuing the intake of wine, again starts taking it in excessive quantity suffers from the diseases named 'Dhvammasaka' and 'Vikshaya'. They are curable with difficulty and manageable particularly in the person debilitated by disorders.

Dhvammasaka

Signs and Symptoms

  • Excessive salivation
  • Dryness of the throat and mouth
  • Intolerance to sound
  • Excessive drowsiness
  • Excessive sleep

Vikshaya

Signs and Symptoms

  • Abnormality in the throat and heart
  • Mental confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Pain in the body
  • Fever
  • Thirst
  • Cough
  • Headache

Management of 'Dhvammasaka' and 'Vikshaya'

The management is the same as that of Vata Madatyaya. Such a person should be given medicated enema, medicated ghee, milk, ghee massage, unction, bath, foods and drinks which cause alleviation of Vata. By the above mentioned therapeutic measures, 'Dhvammasaka' and 'Vikshaya' get alleviated.

Gods of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is ascribed a divine origin. Many different sources tell about different gods and people about the origin of Ayurveda. In Kerala Ayurveda practicing starts with addressing Dhanwantary Gods (Rudra Dhanwantarikal) in plural, not as a single entity. They also ascribethe origin of Ayurveda to Aswini Gods.

There is confusion about Dhanwantary as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu or a group of gods who transcribed the knowledge of life (Ayurveda) to humankind.

A story tells Lord Dhanvantary appeared from the ocean with a pot of divine nectar of immortality, while the gods and demons were churning the ocean of milk (palazhi). This story undermines Dhanvantary as an incarnation of Lord Vishu, because Lord Vishnu was in the form of a tortoise supporting the Mandara Mountain, which was used to churn the ocean.

This dhanvantary has four arms, each bearing different items signifying the different specialties in Ayurveda. One among the objects is a leech, signifying surgery in Ayurveda.

A re-incarnation of this Dhanvantary occurred when the King of Kasi was able to ask Lord Dhanvantary as his son. Lord Dhanvantary, responding to the deep penance the King of Kasi was in, agreed to be born in human form. He, as the son of the King of Kasi remained an ascetic, but was forced to become the King of Kasi. He prepared the treatises of Ayurveda on all the eight limbs of Ayurveda.

The story of Ashwini Gods
Ashwini Gods or Aswini kumaras were said to present the knowledge of Ayurveda to Lord Indra, the king of Gods. Lord Indra gave this knowledge to Dhanvantari, Kashayapa and Bharadwaj. These three seers are still held in esteemed position by Ayurveda practitioners.

Aswini Twins and Lord Dhanvantary (Dhanvatars) are regarded as gods of Ayurveda.
