Ayurvedic Treatment for paralysis mainly focuses on helping a paralysed person adapt to life by making them as independent as possible. Paralysis in Ayurveda is called as Pakshaghat which is one of the Vata vyadhis mentioned in the classical texts. Ayurvedic treatment for paralysis consists of several types of massages that relax the muscles and stimulate nerves. Therapies that correct vata doshas also are also considered as important Ayurvedic treatment for paralysis.

What is a paralysis?

Paralysis is loss of muscle function for one or more muscles. Paralysis can be accompanied by a loss of feeling (sensory loss) in the affected area if there is sensory damage as well as motor. Paralysis can affect the entire body or a specific body part. When the whole body is affected it is known as complete paralysis. When it affects a specific body part it is known as partial paralysis. A facial paralysis is one of the most common disabilities resulting from stroke and mainly affects one side of the face.

What are the causes of paralysis?

The main cause of paralysis is the impairment of nerves in the spinal cord or brain. Stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis are considered as the four most common causes of paralysis. However, some more brain disorder, infections, or even environmental toxins can also cause paralysis. Have a look at the following list that gives the causes of paralysis.

Neurological diseases, such as Cerebral Palsy, Bell’s Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Peripheral Neuropathy

Infectious or autoimmune diseases such as HIV, Lyme disease, Spondylitis, and Guillain-Barre syndrome

Serious or life-threatening conditions such as brain tumor, trauma, hemorrhage, or stroke

Trauma such as a herniated vertebral disk, broken or severed spinal cord, or direct trauma to a nerve
Environmental factors such as toxins, radiation or poisons

What are the signs and symptoms of paralysis?

Paralysis impairs the muscle power and thus may result in total or partial immobility. Even if it is a partial paralysis it has a significant effect on the other systems in the body. The common signs and symptoms of paralysis include,

  • Changes to circulation and respiration
  • Changes to the kidneys and gastrointestinal system
  • Changes to muscles, joints, and bones
  • Spasticity of the limbs
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pressure sores
  • Edema
  • Blood clots in the lower limbs
  • Feelings of numbness or pain
  • Skin injury
  • Bacterial infection
  • Disruption of the normal working of the tissues, glands, and organs
  • Constipation
  • Loss of control of urination
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Abnormal sweating
  • Abnormal breathing or heart rate
  • Balance problems
  • Behavioral issues
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing
  • Vision problems

What are the type of Paralysis?

Paralysis can affect any body parts and impair body functions in several ways. As a result there are several types of paralysis. However, based on the body region involved there are 4 main types of paralysis.

Overweight and obesity :Excessive weight in obesity puts too much stress and pressure on the knee joints during regular activities such as walking or standinge

Monoplegia : Monoplegia refers to the paralysis of limb, most typically one limb. Cerebral palsy is the main cause of this paralysis. However, it may also be caused due to stroke, tumour or brain injuries.

Hemiplegia : Hemiplegia is a partial paralysis and affects an arm and a leg on the same side of the body.

Paraplegia : Paraplegia is a paralysis of body parts below the waist. It usually affects both legs, hips. People who have paralysis of lower body have difficulty with functions, such as sexuality and elimination.

Quadriplegia : Quadriplegia indicates is paralysis of body below the neck. This type of paralysis affects all four limbs, and the torso. Spinal cord injuries occurring following a heavy velocity accident, falls or sports injury can cause this type of paralysis.

How does Ayurveda cure Paralysis?

According to Ayurveda the main line of treatment of paralysis is normalizing the flow of Prana Vayu. This is done by following therapies and should be carried out in all stages of paralysis depending on the general condition of the patient.

Abhyangam : An Ayurvedic full body massage that relaxes the muscles and nerves

Padabhyanga : Padabhyanga relaxes muscles and ligaments in the lower limbs.

Pizhichil : Pizhichil Ayurvedic Treatment includes massage with warm oil and therefore can stimulate the nerves and muscles.

Sneha Vasti : Since paralysis is one of the Vata vyadhis mentioned in the classical Ayurvedic text texts, Sneha vasti is used to correct the vata dosha.

What are the Side Effects of Ayurvedic Treatment of Paralysis?

The Ayurvedic therapies for paralysis are generally safe, and use herbal or natural oils and medications. It is recommended to visit a professional Ayurvedic centre and get advice from a qualified Ayurvedic doctor before starting a treatment.

Ayurveda strives to achieve balance within the individual’s mental and physical state of being. According to Ayurveda, anxiety disorders are caused due to pragya apradh (the unhealthy adaptation of physical and mental type leading to the mental imbalance).
Symptoms of depression and anxiety are triggered by excessive mental and physical stress, or disruptions of natural biological rhythms. According to Ayurveda, psychological problems start when fundamental imbalances develop in the biological intelligence that controls all bodily processes.
-Vata imbalance contributes to anxiety, fear, mental instability and insomnia
-Pitta imbalance may give rise to anger and irritability
-Kapha imbalance may lead to lethargy and depression
Anxiety According To Ayurveda
Anxiety comes under the umbrella of mental diseases called as manovaha strota vyadhi. Unmaad (hysteria) and apasmaar (epilepsy) are some of the mental diseases described in Ayurveda.
The pathology of the anxiety disorders in Ayurveda is due to the vikriti of manovaha strota due to vata. The basic line of treatment would be to eliminate the vata dushti (reason). Nasya therapy (inhalation therapy) is used as the nasal cavity is considered to be the entrance to the brain.
The anxiety disorders and the symptoms described in the classical ayurvedic texts are almost similar to those mentioned in modern science. The symptoms in anxiety disorders can be divided into physical and mental symptoms.
Physical And Mental Symptoms Of Anxiety
The physical symptoms of anxiety are the consistent condition of the reflex action that body shows in cases of danger like increased pulse, hot or cold flashes, stiff muscles, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, headache and insomnia.
The mental symptoms are restlessness, behavior problems, nervousness, imaginary fear, hyperactivity, and confusions.
Herbs To Treat Anxiety According To Ayurveda
-Sarpagandha
-Khus
-Jatamansi
-Bramhi
-Kevada
-Vacha
-Tagar
-Amla
-Rose
Brain Tonics And Relaxation Herbs
Medhya (brain tonics /intellect improvisers) are used to balance the loss of concentration, memory, and insomniac disturbances that occur with anxiety.
-Nervine tonics like ashwagandha and bala are used to strengthen the nervous system.
-The choorna of single and multiple combinations are used. Like saraswat choorna, tagaradi choorna and ashvagandhadi choorna, and single drug choorna like vacha choorna, jatamansi choorna are used.
-Along with these medicines, the Rasayana preparation Brahmi Rasayana, ghrita (ghee based medicines) like maha paishachik ghrita, panchagavya ghrita, puran ghrita, and brahmi ghrita are also given.
-Fermented preparations like saraswatarishta, balarishta are used. The rasa (mercuric) preparations like krishna chaturmukh ras, unmad gajkesari ras and smriti sagar ras are frequently used in anxiety disorders.
-For controlling insomnia, jatamansi kwath (decoction) and madananand modak (big shaped sugar mixed pill) are given.
-The herb brahmi (bacopa monari) is a good anti-anxiety medicine (see- bacopa monari). The jatamansi herb is also a good sedative and safe, it doesn’t build up dependence and cause withdrawal symptoms like conventional medicines.

Triphala Vs Chyawanprash – Which Is The

 Right One For You?

Triphala and Chyawanprash are two great Ayurvedic medicines. They both rejuvenate body and hence useful for anti aging purpose. But one has only three ingredients and the other has 37+. One requires just five minutes to prepare (powder the three and mix), while the other requires one full day. So how to decide which suits whom? Let’s find out.
Nourishment Vs Cleansing (detoxifying)  -  If you are particularly looking for cleansing and detoxifying, Triphala is more suited. I am not saying that Chyawanprash is not cleansing (please take your gun off my head :) ) Of course it does cleansing as well. But because it contains ghee, sugar, raisins etc, it is more nourishing than cleansing. So, if you are looking for nourishment and rejuvenation, go ahead with Chyawanprash.
Dosha imbalance -  Both are Tridosha balancing, no doubt. But Triphala balances Kapha and Pitta Dosha, more and Chyawanaprash balances Kapha and Vata Dosha, more.

Where Triphala holds a slight edge over Chyavanprash -
Diabetes - If you are diabetic, taking Triphala makes more sense than taking Chyawanprash. Chyawanprash contains sugar. If the diabetes is well under control, then taking Chyavanaprasham does not do any harm, but still, taking Triphala is safer and makes more sense.
Eye care - It does not mean that Chyawanprash will not help in eye care. But if you are targeting specifically your eyes, then Triphala makes more sense than Chyawanprash.
Wound care – Again, Chyawanprash is helpful, but Triphala is more helpful in non healing wounds. It is useful internally, in the form of powder / capsule / Kashaya. Triphala Kashaya is also used externally for washing wounds, to do sitz bath in piles, fistula, etc.
Chronic skin diseases – associated with itching, scaling, secretions etc, Triphala is more suited.
Obesity - Because Triphala does not increase digestion strength to that extent as Chyawanprash, and because Triphala doubles as mild laxative and has cleansing property, it is more suited in obesity.
Where Chyawanprash is more suited than Triphala -
Respiratory disease, asthma, cold cough -  The first benefit of Chyawanprash enlisted in the ancient formula is – useful in Kasa (cough, cold) and Shwasa (asthma, wheezing etc).
Digestion boost – Chyavanprash contains spices like long pepper, cinnamon etc which are very useful for boosting the digestion strength.
Lean and weak – If you are underweight with loss of appetite, then look no further than Chyawanprash.
Too young and too old – Chyawanprash can be given in very minute dose to kids above 3 years of age. It helps immensely in keeping the cold, cough, anorexia away. Similarly, it is more suited in very elderly people who are weak due to severe degeneration.
Aphrodisiac – Apart from being a good anti aging medicine, Chyawanprash is also very good to improve sexual health.
Improvement in skin complexion – It nourishes the skin, so improves skin texture and complexion.
Memory and Intelligence - One of the important benefits of Chyawanprash as quoted in the traditional formula is – improvement in memory and concentration.
Having enlisted the above criteria, it is also noteworthy that, both are not mutually exclusive. They can be taken together, if your doctor decides so. But if you are to chose only one among the two, I hope that the above points might come in handy. Cheers!

In Ayurveda, Chicken Pox is known as Laghu Masurika. It is medically known as Vericella. It is a highly contagious disease and mostly attacks children between the age group of one to ten years and some times affect adults. It is a viral disease and even after the disease has been cured the virus remains hidden in the body and may attack again later. It is often mistaken as small pox but it is a different disease and less severe.

CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

It is mainly caused by a virus called varicella-zoster virus. Local skin infection due to over growth of other bacteria, sensitive skin, prolonged illness, poor immunity, use of a strong soap and taking a long bubble bath may also be one of the causes of chicken pox. People who are in contact with the chicken pox patients have a high chance of getting the disease.
The disease starts with slight fever and pain in the back and legs. The person has a runny or stuffy nose and a burning sensation in the eyes which become red in color and water. There may also be a feeling of chill. Within twenty four hours of these symptoms small red papules appear on the back, arms, legs and chest. Sometimes these papules may also arise on the fore head. These papules turn into vesicles but these dry up within a day or two and a crust brown in color appear on them. These eruptions last several days.
According to ayurveda, chicken pox is caused due to the vitiation of all the doshas – vata dosha, pitta dosha and kapha dosha.

AYURVEDIC MEDICINES AND PRESCRIPTIONS
The ayurvedic medicines prescribed for chicken pox are different for the first week and the second week. They are mentioned below:
  • FOR FIRST WEEK
AYURVEDIC MEDICINESDOSE
Eladyarishta15 ml to be taken with equal quantity of water after meals.
Swarnamakshika Bhasma100 mg of swarnamakshika bhasma to be taken with the decoction of the bark of kanchnar tree in morning and evening.

Indukala Vatika100 mg of indukala vatika to be taken two times in a day.

OTHER NATURAL REMEDIES PRESCRIBED BY AYURVEDA
Herbal tea made of herbs like holy basil, lemon, marigold, chamomile and honey is very beneficial in the treatment of chicken pox and should be taken three to fur times in a day.
  • Neem finds great use in the treatment of chicken pox and is most widely used during this condition. It has anti viral properties and fights against the varicella zoster virus. Neem leaves should be boiled in water and mixed in bath water. This provides relief from eruptions and itching. Neem leaves should be spread on the bed which again eases the patient from itching and speeds up the process of drying the fluid in the blisters. Neem leaves can be consumed on an empty stomach early in the morning.
  • Oatmeal should be boiled and this water should be mixed in the bath water to get relief.
  • Itching can be reduced by applying honey to the affected area.
  • A soup made of carrots and coriander should be taken once.
  • A mud pack may be applied twice a day on the abdomen and chest.
  • Water mixed with some baking soda should be used to sponge the skin of the patient. It reduces itching and irritation after drying.
  • The water drained from the green peas should be used to sponge the skin. This helps to remove the scars.
DIET AND OTHER REGIMEN
  • A normal diet depending on the appetite may be given to the patient. Foods which are hard to digest should not be given.
  • Fresh fruit juices and raw vegetable juices are very beneficial. Lemon juice is also very helpful during this condition.
  • Purgatives should be avoided.
  • All types of contact with the affected person should be avoided.

OA Knee joint is mainly the form of Osteo-Arthritis which is a degenerative joint disease due to the lack of lubricating (Synovial) fluid in the joints, leading to damage in cartilage, bone, joint capsule, ligaments and muscles.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a condition when the cartilage cushioning the ends of bones in a synovial joint gradually deteriorates resulting in pain, tenderness and stiffness of the joints. Osteoarthritis affects millions of people worldwide and eventually ends up in loss of movement of the effected joints. The condition is more common in weight bearing joints like knees, hip etc., affecting the normal routine lifestyle. The risk factors identified by modern medicine include old age (wear and tear), obesity or extra body weight, injuries and bone deformities. OA is seen more commonly in women compared to men. The treatment targets to control the pain and inflammation at the effected joint.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Osteoarthritis:

In Ayurveda, this condition is referred to as Sandhivata. Among the three doshasvata dosha is considered to be the one responsible for all movements. Imbalance in vata causes the ama (toxins) to move into the colon from where it reaches the circulatory system and gets deposited in the weak joints resulting in stiffness and pain characteristic of arthritis. Thus, the main objective in Ayurveda to treat Osteoarthritis is to remove ama by Ayurvedic treatments of Panchakarma and also improving the digestion and at the same time reducing the vata by relieving the pain and inflammation. Along with elimination of ama from the body, it is also important to follow fasting or a controlled diet so that the body reduces release of harmful toxins and the immune system is able to eliminate harmful toxins from the body. Certain Ayurvedic herbs are beneficial as they act as free radical scavengers and help fight against toxins. Massage with certain herbal oils also to reduce vata and get rid of pain and inflammation. A regular routine of yoga and mild exercise further helps achieve the right balance of physical and mental stress.

What Ayurveda Offers:

Ayurveda specializes in detoxification. Some of the detoxification treatments involve a mild sweating action to help open the physical channels of the body and help push out the toxins. Also, Ayurveda offers special knee joint massage and external treatment for relieving knee pain. In this particular Ayurvedic procedure, the warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is used to bathe the knee. This may be followed by hot fomentation of the knee joint.

Janu Basti:

Ayurvedic This is an authentic Ayurveda procedure to relieve you from knee pain and is generally performed at Doctor Panickers Ayurveda Hospital. Two trained therapists will lightly massage your knee with warm and medicated oil which is vata balancing. And then warm medicated oil is filled over the knees, by making a doughnut shape area encircling the knees. This entire procedure takes about 30 minutes. This is one of the best known Ayurveda treatments for knee pain.

Knee Noises: Do You Need to Be Worried About Pops and Cracks?

Quite a lot of people start worrying about their knees making pops and cracks sound. In most cases, these noises are not indicative of any underlying problem. Many people have knees that make these noises when they squat down or go through the full arc of motion. But when the cracking or popping is accompanied with pain or swelling, then it should be treated.

Why Does Knees Make Noise?

As we age, cartilage, which is the tissue that covers the bones can develop uneven areas. When we squat or stand, the sound comes from these rougher surfaces gliding across each other. The same sound could also emit from another tissue called ligaments that connects one bone to the other.

Also while aging, gas can build up in the areas surrounding the joint, forming tiny bubbles in the synovial fluid. When you bend your knee, some of the bubbles burst, and ligaments may snap or pop. This is normal, and happens to everyone from time to time.

When Should You Worry?

If you have cracking or popping that does cause pain or swelling, it can be a sign of:
- Meniscus tears, which is often caused by sudden, acute trauma, such as twisting while playing sports.
- Cartilage injury or wear.
- Knee crepitus, another term for cracking and popping sounds, is one of the common symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA). It also can be one of the symptoms of rheumatoid or infectious arthritis, and may accompany several different types of knee injuries.

Treatment

Crepitus is harmless and needs no treatment when it isn’t caused by disease, injury, another condition, and doesn’t hurt. But, when pain accompanies a crunchy knee, treatment will depend on the underlying cause. In rare cases, surgery or joint replacement may be necessary.

Ghee or clarified butter, in the past found mainly in many Indian dishes, is now becoming a favorite ingredient not only for Ayurveda cooks, but also main stream chefs and nutritionists as they experience the qualities it brings to their dishes.  Ghee is made from butter, but its milk solids and salts have been removed which then makes it a pure “oil”.  This oil can be brought to high temperatures without burning.  (An important factor in the kitchen and possibly why many French cooks use it in their sauces).  When ghee melts it is clear and has a beautiful yellow color as well as a  faint nutty smell, a little like popcorn.  That quality only enhances the richness and flavor of everything that contains it.
Ghee and Ayurveda: The Health Benefits of Using Ghee (Clarified Butter)
Ghee and Ayurveda: The Health Benefits of Using Ghee (Clarified Butter)
Ghee can also be used instead of butter.  In fact I use it much more often than I use butter.  It becomes solidified at lower temperatures, so in most cases does not need to be refrigerated.  Ghee does need to be stored in a glass container with a tight lid.  When removing from the jar, be careful to not contaminate and ruin it with other food products that may be present on a knife or spoon.
Ghee has a wonderful rich taste, but it also contains amazing healing properties.  First, it is tridoshic, meaning all 3 constitutions (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) benefit from its qualities of a sweet rasa (taste), cooling vīrya (the effects of ghee on metabolism) and sweet vipāka (post-digestive effect). It should be noted that the Kapha constitution needs to use sparingly, as ghee has kapha qualities and may cause imbalance.
Ghee is also used in Ayurveda for medicinal purposes.  It is considered a prabhāva, which means that its dynamic, electo-magnetic action, or its ability to heal, cannot be explained by the logic of rasa, virya, or vipāka.  Considering Dr. Frawley’s quote, which reflects the idea that the “essences” of all the grasses in the world have come through the cow, then through the milk, then through the butter and then finally refined into ghee, I think is such a beautiful way to explain that “nature heals nature”.
Ghee and Ayurveda: The Health Benefits of Using Ghee (Clarified Butter)
Ghee and Ayurveda: The Health Benefits of Using Ghee (Clarified Butter)
Because of its potent healing qualities you don’t need much.  Dr. Lad states in his book Textbook of Ayurveda General Principles of Management and Treatment that if one teaspoon or less is eaten per meal, ghee can actually help to increase HDL, the good cholesterol.  Some additional reasons to use ghee when preparing your food are:
• Digestion (helps absorb and assimilate nutrients)
• Improves memory
• Helps increase flexibility by lubricating the connective tissues
• Carries the medicinal properties of herbs into tissues (yogavāhi)
• Stimulates the liver to produce fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K
You will find ghee the base of many herbal ointments for skin problems such as rashes and burns.  While attending Ayurveda School, I was lucky enough to get to help make a ghee face cream using ghee and water in a copper bowl.  It took the entire class several hours to complete this project of “washing” the ghee.  The procedure included mixing ice water with ghee in a copper bowl (no bacteria can grow in a copper bowl).  We each took turns stirring the mixture with our hands, and then filtering it through cheese cloth to only start the sequence again with the next student.  We did this over one hundred times.  The ghee face cream was the consistency of thick, whipped cream.  It was an incredible experience and so much fun, especially having ghee all over our hands when we were done.  We didn’t want to wash it off and waste it so we just kept rubbing more and more of it on our faces, arms and legs. We each were given a small container that was like owning gold, at least for me, and I used it over the next few months. I have used ghee for many things since then.  I even use ghee in my eyes to moisten the tissues and relieve dry, red eyes

Mindfulness : Being Aware, Being Present, Being Content.

Most of us go through our lives generally thinking about the past or worried or anxious about what is to come in the future. Here are 5 easy ways you can help yourself to be more mindful. This not only makes you more aware of this very moment, but also puts your brain in much relaxed and calmer state.

Make a Start towards Mindfulness:

At the start of your day, spend a minute consciously thinking about the present moment, not thinking about what awaits you. Connect with your body and detect any felt-sense. Repeat this multiple times of day (4-6 times, trying and avoiding any thoughts about past or future.
Spend 5 minutes during your breaks focusing on your breathing with your eyes closed. Don’t try and alter anything, just try to be aware of how your body breathes. It does it on its own; it doesn’t need your mind to do it. So just be an observer.
While eating your meals, try and focus on the taste and your bodily senses that it affects you. Do it whenever you can remember. Appreciate the moment and the nourishment you are receiving.
While seated in your office, often remind yourself about the physical contact that your body makes with the chair underneath. On how the weight is distributed and if there is any discomfort in any part of your body. Again, just observe for couple of minutes, no need to change anything.
When in conversation or discussion with anyone, try and focus on what the other person is saying. Try and keep your mind open to all possibilities and opinions. Too often, we participate in the conversation trying to convert our interlocutor to our opinion instead of simply sharing it if appropriate.
The practice of mindfulness basically teaches us how to be aware of everything that is happening around us. Not only does it provide us balance but research shows that mindfulness works positively in curing various ailments from depression to addiction and even high blood pressure.

5 Natural Ayurvedic Tips For A Pain-Free Period

For Personal Appointments, Contact: 9495975013. Consulting Time: 8.30 AM to 7.30 PM. Write us to doctorpanickers@gmail.com for free ayurvedic consultation online. visit us at www.doctorpanickers.com

It was not until recently that I really believed that a pain-free, normal period was possible.
Having popped various pills to mitigate the excruciating pain we used to endure during each and every cycle, Let us make a make a firm resolution that  we would  no longer take any kind of painkiller during our periods; Let us decide we would simply take the pain.
It was not until encountering the amazing science of Ayurveda three years later that pain-free periods became not only a perceivable possibility, but rather a reality for me.

Ayurveda: The Science of Life

Stemming from the root Sanskrit words “ayush,” which means “life,” and “veda,” which is “knowledge” or “the study of,” Ayurveda is the knowledge or study of life. It is the sister science of Yoga, which allows us to experience feeling as great as we do when we get off of our mats in each and every moment of every day.
What sets Ayurveda apart from the modern medical system of healthcare is that it actually addresses the root causes of why people manifest certain health problems in the first place. That’s right—this is not mere symptom management, which keeps you caught in a continuous cycle of helplessness and hopelessness.
Ayurveda is so empowering because it gives you tools to say goodbye to symptoms—and keep them away, by providing customized solutions that take into consideration a wide range of causative factors for disease.

The Disease-Fighting Potential Of Our Daily Routines

In Ayurveda, the daily routine is called Dinacharya. Stemming from the words “din,” which means “day,” and “charya,” which means “to follow,” Ayurveda’s daily routines allow us to live in greater harmony with nature, and to thereby prevent the onset of a variety of different diseases. These daily routines also actually activate health.
Ayurveda’s Dinacharya recommendations extend to many different situations, including how to optimally manage one’s monthly cycle, so that it does not manage you instead (as often happens when we are not armed with knowledge to empower ourselves).
Following these tips has truly transformed my whole experience of that time of the month, which I no longer anticipate with the same kind of fearful dread I used to feel about having periods.

Avoid Exercise (including yoga asanas, or poses)

This one may come as a surprise for some of you out there who may utilize the endorphins released from exercise to counteract pain during or before periods. Ayurveda recommends avoiding exercise during one’s cycle; however, exercise activates a bio-force called Vata dosha in the body. This means no yoga asanas, too; as much as I used to love practicing asanas during my period, I have noticed how much better I feel now that I have stopped.
One of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda is the theory of the five great elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) as the building blocks of the entire universe, as well as individual mind/body containers. As one of three doshas, Vata dosha is comprised of the ether and air elements.
When aggravated in the body, as it easily becomes when a woman exercises during her period, Vata dosha has the potential to create 80 different diseases (compared with the possibility of only 40 and 20 diseases associated with the other two doshas, called Pitta and Kapha).
In addition to its great potential to create disease and disturbance throughout the body, as well as the mind, it is an imbalanced Vata dosha that creates pain. Hence, there is a great emphasis on balancing and calming Vata dosha in Ayurveda.

Abstain From Sexual Activity

Sex is a form of exercise, and it is for the same reasons listed above that Ayurveda recommends abstaining during that time of the month. There are five subtypes of Vata dosha. Sexual activity disturbs the flow of the downward flowing Vata dosha, in particular. When downward flowing air and ether get disturbed in their natural course for too long, a woman can increase her chances of menstrual disturbance, painful periods, and even future miscarriages.

Cut Down On Unnecessary Travel

Vata dosha represents the dynamic dimension of the three doshas in Ayurveda. Because the nature of air is to constantly flow, Vata is accordingly connected with the principle of movement. Hence, too much motion aggravates Vata dosha, which is why Ayurveda recommends that menstruating women just say no to unnecessary travel during their cycles.

Eat Light

The health of the digestive fire (called Agni) is considered a reflection of one’s overall health in Ayurveda. Ayurveda teaches how important it is to eat foods that are light, warm and cooked, as heavy, cold and raw foods are considered aggravating to Vata dosha, which is cold by nature. The digestive fire is naturally lowered when a woman menstruates, so it is especially important for women to follow this tip during periods.

Drink Warm Water With Ajwain Seeds

Ajwain seeds (Bishop’s weed) is an amazing Ayurvedic spice that you can boil in a small pot of water. You can then drink this Ajwain water hot, warm or at room temperature, depending on your particular constitution (which an Ayurvedic practitioner can help you determine) whenever you are having active period-related pain. It was so amazing to me to discover that a solution to all those years of painful periods was right in my traditional Indian mother’s spice cabinet all along!
One caveat: Those who are suffering from excess heat or heat-related conditions, or suspect they are, may not wish to follow this advice, as Ajwain seeds are heating in potency. If you are in doubt about whether this advice suits you, do consult an Ayurveda practitioner.
The best part of following the above advice is that it also paves the way for an ease-filled future menopause experience.
